Bottom Line- why are we importing more goods than we are exporting, while most Americans are aware of the burning issues of our declining export deficit? The US trade deficit legitimizes the U.S. trend to continue to import more than we export. We are exporting a great amount of raw materials and importing luxury products, probally most of the shoes and clothes you are wearing. It would be false to pretend we are not of aware of the rapid down-ward spiral of U.S. manufacturing and production.
For decades many corporations, universities and research centers have launched programs aimed at saving U.S. manufacturing. Many efforts have been discussed, planned and initiated. Efforts have been made by prestigious organizations such as SME, NACFAM, The Council on Competitiveness, IMTI (Integrated Manufacturing Technology Initiative), DOD (with aggressive research and support of academia), ATI (Advanced Technology Institute) and NGMTI (Next Generation Manufacturing Technology Initiative). These centers are devoted to lean manufacturing, agile manufacturing and flexible manufacturing. It is unfortunate that these efforts have slowed down the decline but they have not stopped it.
So why does U.S. manufacturing still continue to decline?
The American people and the media are not actively discussing these issues…we will continue to use our discounted imported luxury goods until we realize it may be too late to reverse the rapidly increasing U.S. export deficit
